在中国历史上，春秋战国是思想和文化最为辉煌灿烂、群星闪烁的时代。这一时期出现了诸子百家彼此诘难，相互争鸣，盛况空前的学术局面，在中国思想发展史上占有重要的地位。那么各家各派的思想如何英译呢？
1.儒家
儒家思想是中国古代最有影响力的思想流派，其代表人物是孔子、孟子、荀子。
【仁】：“仁”的基本含义是爱人，进而达到人与人之间、天地万物之间一体的状态。
Ren : The basic meaning of the term is love for others. Its extended meaning refers to the state of harmony among people, and the unity of all things under heaven.
【义】：“义”的基本含义是合理、恰当，引申而有两重含义：其一，指人行事的合理依据与标准；其二，指在道德意识的判断与引导下，调节言行使之符合一定的标准，以获得合理的安处。
Righteousness: The basic meaning of yi is “reasonable” and “proper”. It has two extended meanings. One is the proper basis and standard for people’s actions. The other is to adjust one’s words or deeds to meet certain standards, under the guidance of moral judgments.
【礼】：社会秩序的总称，用以规范个人与他人、与天地万物乃至鬼神之间的关系。
Li (Rites/Social Norms/Propriety): Li is a general term for social norms which regulate an individual’s relationship with other people, everything else in nature, and even ghosts and spirits.
孟子称“亚圣”，发展了孔子的思想，认为人性本善，提出“民贵君轻”说。
【性善】Human Nature Is Good.
【惠民】：惠爱民众，施惠于民。
Benefit the People
荀子在对待人性的态度上与孔孟相反，认为人性本恶，要通过后天的教化使人向善。
【性恶论】Human Nature Is Evil.
2.道家
道家思想源远流长，最早可以追溯到上古时期。春秋时老子是其创始人。
【道法自然】：“道”效法、顺应万物的自然状态。

【无为而治】：不过度作为而把国家治理得很好。

战国时期，庄子成为老子之后道家学派的主要代表人物，其以丰富的想象力与华丽的文笔著就的《庄子》。
【逍遥】：人的心灵的一种自由、无待的状态。
Carefree: A state of mind totally free from all constraints.
【齐物】：破除事物之间差异与对立的一种认识态度或生活方式。
Seeing Things as Equal: A worldview of lifestyle that seeks to reconcile differences and contradictions among things.
3.墨家
墨家产生于战国时期，创始人为墨翟（墨子），代表平民阶级的利益。
【兼爱】：无差等地相互关爱。
Universal Love
【非攻】：反对、禁止不义的战争。
Denouncing Unjust Wars
4.法家
法家是中国历史上研究国家治理方式的学派，提出了富国强兵、以法治国的思想。其代表人物如商鞅、李斯及韩非子。
【法治】：以法治国。
Rule by Law
【法不阿贵】：法律对一切人平等，对权贵也绝不殉情偏袒。
