A Happy Hawk
Huang Mengwen
The sun was hanging between two hills in the west and drifting around it were clouds as red as blood. The air was extremely dry and hot.
Circling in the sky to and fro, I opened my eyes wider and saw that small village nearby. It was downright in ruin. A gust of strong wind was stirred up by my waving wings, and like a military mini-plane preparing for landing, I swooped toward it.
Thank God! I was lucky to be born on this African land, where people’s lives were humbler than those of mice in the developed areas. Every day, people died of bullets or famine. And every day, to my great contentment, I had flesh to eat. Strong and robust, I had no need to toil and moil as those poor people did for their miserable kids.
Look! That little girl, black and sallow, was squatting to take some dirty water from the holes on the ground with a little iron bucket. A ten-year-old girl was still naked! More shameless than us bird—we even had feathers to cover up our bodies!
She towed her skinny and meager body and tottered on, looking ahead with her vacant eyes, languish and numb. I knew that the opportunity came, and this night I was going to have a sumptuous dinner. After all, little kids’ flesh was tender, she was skin and bone, though.
The sun was setting and hawks were hovering in the evening glows …
The little girl drank up the last drops of dirty water and reluctantly closed her lips. She staggered to a rubbish dump nearby and dug into it with her little bony and shivering paws. What an idiot! Besides some fragmented limbs left by us, what else edible could be found there?
As a matter of fact, I fixed my eyes on this little girl for some time, however, what made me quite angry and resentful was that her black mother was always beside her. She had a family of seven, five of whom died of hunger and were eaten by us one after another. The mother loved this little girl very much. So long as she found some leftovers, she would let her daughter wolf them up. She would rather starve herself to death! What was more abominable was that she kept protecting her daughter all day long. For several times, the mother hindered my action and made my secret attack into a vain attempt. Finally, my opportunity came! This time, nobody would come to protect this girl! Where could this little devilkin hide herself?
The mother died of hunger yesterday, right beside this dump. Upon her death, she held her daughter tightly in her arms for fear that her beloved daughter would be caught by us. I couldn’t help chuckling secretly. Your own life was at stake now, and how could you save your daughter?
Of course, I ate the mother first. The dead body would rot away if not eaten in time. Her flesh was dry and hard, which almost hurt my mouth and stomach. The remains of her body were scattered around the dump, here and there.
Without more ado, I dived down and stopped on the ground, face to face with the little girl.
She kept on searching food in the dump, falling down for several times and struggling to stand up again. Her limbs were shivering with great fatigue and hunger. After quite a long time, she finally grabbed a bone and in a rush she stuffed it into her mouth. In her numb and blank face, the only thing moving were those colorless dry lips. Aha, the little silly was gnawing her mother’s limb!
It seemed that nothing was left for her to eat. She became desperate. She struggled to stand erect, holding the bucket up. There was no water in it.
Trembling violently, she couldn’t support herself and heavily fell down. She could no longer stand up.
I was over-hilarious. My mouth began to be watering, and I flapped and bounced to her.
